The time when your baby goes from learning to roll over to crawling happens very quickly, that most parents end up scrambling to find the first baby gate they come across to protect their baby from stairs and rooms they shouldn’t go into, even if it isn’t the best baby gate. The trouble with many baby gates on the market is that they can be difficult to install, leave marks on your walls, and sometimes be hazardous to your baby. When we analyzed the current lineup looking for the best baby gate, we found four that stood above the rest as the best options for your baby: North States, Dreambaby, Munchkin & Cardinal Gates.
Best Baby Gates
These best baby gates are what most moms and dads would consider “traditional” baby gates, in that they can be placed between two walls and secured. There are many different options, like pressure-fit or retractable gates. Be careful if you purchase these, as they tend to be easier to knock down if your child is a little older. With that in mind, we detailed pros and cons to our four best baby gates, and give our pick for the one we liked the most after testing each one out.
Aside from the lone drawback (there is a bottom bar you have to “step over” when passing through, we love everything about the North States Supergate Easy Close Gate. It’s attractive looking, easy to set up, inexpensive, and is very secure. This gate fits an extra wide 38.5” gap without needing extensions, making it our top pick for best baby gate.
Fits Gap: 28″ to 38.5″ Wide & 29″ High
- Tons of great features (listed above)
- Easy to install
- Bottom bar makes you step over it to pass-through
We love the Dreambaby Chelsea Auto Close Security Gate as one of our best baby gates because of the long list of features, like double locking gate, auto close, the option to leave gate open, and much more. The gate is very easy to put together and install. The only drawback is the pressure mounting system, which can be dangerous for larger children.
Fits Gap: 28″ to 32″ Wide & 29.5″ High
- Can buy extensions to reach up to 39” gap.
- Preferred auto close function
- Double locking system and audible “click” lets you know it’s safely shut
- Pressure fit installation
Of the gates we tested, we probably liked the “look” of this unit the least. Despite it not looking as good as some of the other gates, this is one of the most functional gates on the market. The patented latch-style locking system is surprisingly easy to open and shut quickly, and you’ll feel confident that the gate is secure without having to manually close the gate.
Fits Gap: 26.5″ to 40.5″ Wide & 29.5″ High
- Latch-style locking system easy to use
- No bottom bar, making for easy pass-through
- Easy install
- Unattractive design
Honorable Mention: Munchkin Easy Close Metal Baby Gate Review
Munchkin is known for making everything from sippy cups to baby gates, so their name alone puts a lot of parents’ minds at ease. This is a fantastic, low-price option that allows you to add extensions if you should want to move it to wider gap. It looks good, feels sturdy, but can be pretty difficult to put together and set up. There is an “Easy Close” and “Auto Close” option, but we prefer the Easy Close for best baby gate because it doesn’t use the “pressure fit” mounting system.
Fits Gap: 29.5″ to 35″ Wide & 29.5″ High
- Wide door for adults, and easy to open and shut
- Quality materials and feel
